Founded in 1967 by the conductor Benito Juarez and José Luiz Visconti, nowadays the CORALUSP gathers about 500 singers, distributed among 11 distinct groups. The career of this choir includes four foreign tours (USA, Europe, Africa and Argentina), awards by the APCA (São Paulo Art Reviewers Association), concerts in theatres, festivals, churches, public squares, universities, radio and tv broadcasting programs, as well as a large number of recordings. The CORALUSP has been acting as an important center of research and education within the process of preparing professional musicians. It offers to all its members the opportunity of initiation and development, through the work of a team of teachers expert in vocal technique, ear training, sight reading, theory and music history. Under the conducting of Benito Juarez, the CORALUSP usually presents works from the choral-symphonic repertory. Acclaimed by the audiences and professional reviewers, it has been developing, throughout its existence, a very peculiar style – tuned with our era, by mixing the pop and classical idioms, it has pointed to the new way that Brazilian choral music has taken. In 1997, André created one of the eleven groups of CORALUSP – then called “Coral Azul” (Blue Choir). This group was devoted to north-american black music (gospel, spirituals, hymns, and work-songs) and, through the years, a series of changes gradually enlarged and gave versatility to the repertory. After eight years of activities (interrupted only during the time AJ lived in USA), nowadays the group develops a project entitled “Volta ao Mundo em 4 Vozes” (World Tour in 4 Voices), an eclectic repertory with compositions from different world places, written by composers of different periods and styles. |
